A warm fire with ornaments glistening off the trees, the smell of hot chocolate, and the echo of kids’ laughter as Christmas carols carry across the field. Yes, even in these days of Covid-19 there are special places that foster
and embolden a sense of community safely and within social distance confines.
Community is something everyone craves or wants even those who act or say otherwise. Community is the unified heartbeat of humans longing to experience life together whether from a distance or on a porch, or patio.
O’Neal Village is a multi-phase mixed-use neighborhood in the foothills of the mountains off SC Highway 101 between Lake Robinson and Lake Cunningham in Greer, South Carolina. At O’Neal Village, there is an embedded sense of community that has been present since its planning and development. Only 20 minutes from downtown Greenville, SC, and within minutes of local shopping and dining O’Neal Village is strategically located. At Christmas and the holidays, there is an even greater sense of community through both formal and informal gatherings or events. True community isn’t just happenstance it must be fostered, nurtured, and cultivated through design, layout, formal events, and informal ones through the natural gathering and attraction of neighbors.
One example of a formal event is the annual Christmas house decoration awards. The decorations range from hodge-podge, intentionally tacky to well planned and well-designed lights, inflatables, and decorations. Jeff Randolph,
President of The Randolph Group (TRG) ONV’s developer remembers a call that took place years ago in one of TRG’s first showcase communities in the Upstate. “This homeowner called and asked what I was gonna do about the ostentatious display of holiday paraphernalia, and excessive Christmas stuff, to which I replied, nothing, it’s their expression of the season.”
Every year new families move into the thriving O’Neal Village. In 2020 there have been 70+ new additions to the community and each family, or homeowner brings their own traditions, celebrations, and decorations for Christmas and Hanukkah. You can drive or walk through the community and see a variety of expressions from the Clark Griswold type of displays to the more reserved lighted wreath at
the door and Christmas tree through the front window. Each brings their own unique expression to the season.
Every resident has a 2020 story. Some have lost loved ones, others have contracted Covid, many have lost jobs and some have survived without any issues. Each family expressing their joy at this season of giving makes a contribution to the entire community whether they realized it or not. People gather at Wicker Park, light fires in the community fireplace, appreciate decorations while driving or walking through the community, and much more. There is a strong sense of community during the holiday season in ONV.
Come discover the O’Neal Village difference! Drive through and enjoy the decorations and take a long look at what could be your new residence. We love visitors! Merry Christmas, happy holidays and Hanukah! Congratulations to this year’s holiday decoration winners:
